I’ve been knee deep in work for Monday Nights: L.A.’s Scene of the Century, 2005-2016, the exhibition of photos and ephemera from Sean Carnage’s DIY show series that opens at Leiminspace in Chinatown on August 2. I’m one of the co-curators for the show and wrote an essay for the catalog, so my brain is half-stuck in the ‘00s and half-living in the present day, which is strange. I didn’t think the world could possibly be more grim than it was in the midst of the Bush era, but, here we are. Endless war, Fox News and the Great Recession seem quaint in comparison to the red cap crowd’s brand of reality show fascism. 

What made the ‘00s bearable, at least here in Los Angeles, was underground culture. Monday Nights was a big part of that. I think the first one I went to was Halloween of 2005 and I continued to go often throughout the duration of the series. At Monday Nights, I saw so many wildly creative bands/artists play— some of whom I wrote about at the time for L.A. Weekly and other publications— but that was just part of what was happening in the city at that point in time. There were other club nights and venues, not to mention the parties in lofts, warehouses, backyards and living rooms. Once, I even went to a show in a storage unit in Chatsworth.

Former Members of The Mae Shi Reconvene at HLLLYH For New Album URUBURU

Tim Byron wanted to get The Mae Shi back together. It had been about 20 years since the synthpunk band formed in Los Angeles and a decade since the original members reunited for a one-off show at Pehrspace. “It was the cliche of we’re getting the band back together,” he says on a recent video call. And, despite the fact that three of the members— Byron, as well as his brother Jeff Byron and Ezra Buchla— now live in the Bay Area while Brad Breeck and Corey Fogel are in L.A., he was able to do that. They recorded what was intended to be a new album from their old band. “But, at the end of the day,” Byron says, “it was different enough where we decided to give it a different name and have a separate identity from The Mae Shi.” The band morphed into HLLLYH and includes new members Dan Chao, James Baker and Burt Hashiguchi. Debut album  Uruburuis out on June 27. 

HLLLYH played their first show, opening for Brainiac at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, last January. Throughout this past spring, they’ve released three singles, “Dead Clade,” “Uru Buru” and “Flex It, Tagger,” with a cover song B-side included with each release. Byron is right, the music is different enough from what they did in the ‘00s to warrant a different band name. But, the energy of The Mae Shi is still there.

It’s Coachella Weekend, I Went to a Local Show Instead

I hate to break it to you in the midst of this “indie sleaze” moment, but the late ‘00s weren’t that cool. It was the era when poseurs and paparazzi flocked to Hollywood and West Hollywood to catch a glimpse of the misadventures of Lindsay Lohan. Bottle service was on the rise, as were the profiles of well-connected, but barely competent DJs. People started dressing up for Coachella, a baffling development to anyone who ever stepped near a porta potty on the final evening of the festival. This was also the time when it was obvious that we were in an endless war and the divide between the haves and have-nots was just going to get bigger. The late ‘00s foreshadowed all of today’s bullshit, but people were too entranced by gossip blogs to notice. 

Lest I ruin your enjoyment of early 21st century nostalgia, I’ll let you in on one really cool thing that happened in the midst of ‘00s L.A. That was Sean Carnage’s Monday Nights. Between the mid-’00s and mid-’10s, Sean put together weekly showcases of local and touring underground artists first at Il Corral in East Hollywood and then at Pehrspace in Historic Filipinotown.  Over 1100 bands played the events. Some became well-known, at least in indie circles. Most were just really cool.
