This weekend in Los Angeles, we have an all-star tribute to Yoko Ono at The Broad and a Deadhead film festival at Philosophical Research Society. Plus, Iceage is in town for two nights, Edgar Wright makes a stop at Gardena Cinema and more. Keep reading for my weekend recommendations, plus a few events happening early next week.
Concerts
Iceage has a new album, For Love of Grace & the Hereafter, out now and the Danish band is in town on Thursday, August 6, and Friday night, August 7, where they’ll be playing the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever. If you’re feeling a soul and disco vibe, head to Skirball Center on Thursday to catch Annie and the Caldwells, who are playing the Sunset Concert with Campbell Brothers. I caught Annie and the Caldwells at Zebulon last year and it was such an uplifting set. I think I danced through the whole thing. If you’re vibe is more garage and punk, head to Alex’s Bar on Thursday night for The Woggles and The Pandoras.
Starting on August 7 and running through August 14 is The Windgrease Festival at 2220 Arts + Archives. Presented by Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mythscience and Minaret, it’s a week’s worth of experimental concerts, workshops and other happenings. Tickets for the individual events vary in price. Some are free, others range from about $10 – $20. Full festival passes are available too.
You probably already saw, but Boy Harsher is playing Friday, August 7. It’s an all-ages night, but there’s already a wait list , so I don’t know how feasible it is to plan on going if you don’t already have tickets. Saturday night is the Yoko Only show with Yuka Honda, Nels Cline and Yo la Tengo, plus special guests Kathleen Hanna, Corin Tucker, Sylvan Esso, Tune-Yards and more. This is also sold out, although The Broad website says that there might be tickets available at the door depending on capacity.
Also on Saturday, August 8, Ceremony is playing at Monty’s Good Burger in Echo Park. Starts at 5 p.m. and wristbands will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.
On Sunday, August 9, Italo disco-influenced Tinglez play with Loveydove and Bebe + Bubble, are playing at the Stile Rooftop Bar downtown. Starts at 5 p.m.
Clubs/DJ Events
No gigs for me, this weekend, but I should remind you that I’m back at Nocturno one week from this Friday, August 14, and tickets are available now on Dice.
As for this weekend, Friday is Club Underground with Larry G. on the decks. It’s also Chinatown First Fridays, so maybe show up early and check out the art galleries on Chung King Road, grab dinner at one of the neighborhood restaurants, or at the DS Night Market, which has house DJs on Friday night and goes until 10 p.m.
On Saturday night, Joyce Muniz is playing at the Spotlight in Hollywood. That same night, Rose Knows is throwing a Smiths Night over at Cha Cha Lounge and Dancing Therapy’s Italo Fantasy party is happening at Apotheke with Cabslays and Colors 87 on the decks.
Next week: If you want to hear Mike D’s new album, Thank You, before it hits the streets, the advance listening party is happening Monday, August 10, at the Gold Line. Starts at 6 p.m.
Movies
Summer Tour, the new documentary about Deadheads following the final Dead & Company tour, is screening now and, on August 8, it plays at Philosophical Research Society as part of Dead Day. The afternoon starts with a mix of Grateful Dead-related clips and live videos and includes a screening of the 1995 documentary Tie Died: Rock n’ Roll’s Most Deadicated Fans, a live performance from Richard Pictures, a marketplace and special guests.
Down in the South Bay on Saturday, Baby Driver screens at Gardena Cinema with Edgar Wright and CJ Jones on hand for a Q/A. This is an accessible screening with open captions and ASL interpreters hosted by Sign With Me.
Coming up next week: On Tuesday, as part of the Sound & Fury pre-festival events, Jawbreaker: Anti-Cimex Documentary screens at Brain Dead.
