Lisa Molinaro “We All Get Stuck”

Olivia Rodrigo “Serena Joy”
The “surprise single” that Olivia Rodrigo dropped last week is fantastic. The title references The Handmaid’s Tale. The lyrics can relate to a lot of shit happening right now. “If they do it them, they’ll do it to you.”
Optometry “Green Flash”
Optometry, the duo of John Tejada and March Adstrum, is back with a new single called “Green Flash.” For a refresher, read my interview with them from 2025, “Fear is the Mind Killer: Inside the World of Optometry.”
ear “Ne Plus Ultra”
IDK how ear ended up on my radar. Probably Bandcamp recommendations or something. Anyhow, their debut album is called Rumspringa and it came out a few months ago. It’s good stuff. Check it out if you’re into unconventional electronic beats.
Purity Ring “Bitter Rhymes”
In July, Purity Ring, who put on one of the best concerts I saw last year, dropped “Bitter Rhymes,” a song that was originally written for, but not used in, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 1, over a decade ago.
Brendan Angelides feat. Serj Tankian “I’m Afraid of Americans”
A killer cover of a David Bowie song from a killer album. Read my review of Brendan Angelides album, Can You Feel the End Begin?
Fontaines D.C. “Marianne”
No I did not get tickets to see Fontaines D.C. at Hollywood Forever. Like I said before, I’m in no mood to fight with bots over concert tickets that are probably more than I should be spending on concert tickets. But, I am really looking forward to the new album.
Bloc Party “Two More Years”
Here’s an oldie for you. And, by oldie, I mean something from 2005.
Brigette Calls Me Baby “Slumber Party”
The Morrissey-ness of Brigette Calls Me Baby is undeniable. TBH, it was kind of off-putting at first, and The Smiths are, like, one of my favorite bands of all time. But there’s this line in the song about bringing a DVD of Blue Velvet to a slumber party and, honestly, that’s a pretty cool move. If you aren’t watching cult cinema at slumber parties, what are you even doing with your life?
The Womack Sisters “If I Let You”
This one is pretty buzzy right now. I love the combination of retro soul girl group vocals and the ‘60s cocktail party beat.
Lia Braswell “If Not for the Chaos”
I have an interview with Lia Braswell running here later this week. In the meantime, check out the singer and drummer’s new single, “If Not for the Chaos.”
Slayyyter “Birds”
Last week, Turnstile released Never Enough: Versions, a hulking collection of remixes and covers. From what I’ve heard, there’s a lot of good stuff on it, but the standout is really Slayyyter’s take on “Birds.” I love how she goes from pop vocal to metal growl and then throws in a very 2011 dubstep drop.
Fcukers “Beatback (Justin Strauss Remix)”
Fcukers has a bunch of new remixes out now too. I’m particularly into this take on “Beatback” from Justin Strauss, a veteran of the New York scene who also happened to do my favorite remix of Marc Almond’s song “Tears Run Rings” back in the late 1980s.
Chromatics “Shadow (Maceo Plex Remix)”
Figured I should probably throw a couple of the “hits” in here.
The Horrors “Something to Remember Me By”
Another one from the “hits” pile, going back to The Lash with this one from The Horrors.
The Watergirls “Whole of the Moon”
For those of you who were asking “What is that ‘Whole of the Moon’ cover?” when I’ve played it at Underground over the summer, here it is. It’s a cover of The Waterboys song made in honor of Keith McIvor, aka JD Twitch of Optimo, who died last year. DJ Teamy is the ringleader behind the project, which includes lead vocals from Mhairi McClymont and contributions from Bob Weston, CC:Disco, Fantastic Twins, James Murphy (he’s the Bowie-ish voice on the bridge), Pearl M. Wong, Mary Kiani and Pablo Morales. Digital version is out now and you can pre-order the vinyl, which is out in October. Proceeds benefit Beatson Cancer Charity and Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence.
Jaakko Eino Kalevi, Alma Jodorowsky “Palace in My Head (Fred Falke Remix)”
Something I played a lot a couple years ago, especially in Italo-disco influenced sets. I recommend checking out Jaakko Eino Kalevi’s album, Chaos Magic. It’s good.
Boys Noize “Itvlo”
Been meaning to play this out at the clubs, but haven’t yet. The title says everything you need to know.
Mr. Flagio “Take a Chance”
Figured we needed an actual Italo disco song in the set.
Sam Quealy “By My Side”
Released earlier this year, Sam Quealy’s latest album, Jawbreaker, is fantastic. I usually play “Strings of Terror” and, sometimes, “Londontown” in my sets, but wanted to slow things down here at the end of this episode with “By My Side,” a very sweet duet with Marlon Magnée of La Femme.
