I’ll be back in the new wave vs. darkwave room at Klub Nocturno this Friday, March 6. If you haven’t been to Nocturno before, it’s a five-room party at Catch One where you can dance to anything from Boy Harsher to Los Angeles Azules throughout the course of the night. It does tend to sell out in advance, so the sooner you get your tickets, the better. You can do that right now on Dice.
As for the rest of the weekend, plus early next week, keep reading for my recommendations.
Concerts
Seems like it’s more of a club weekend than a concert one. The one show that I do recommend catching if you can is Drama at The Wiltern on Saturday night. I saw the synthpop-meets-house duo open for SG Lewis at the Novo right before the pandemic (had to look up one of my old stories to fact-check that because it seems like a lifetime ago) and they were fantastic. Anyhow, it loos like there are still *some* tickets left to see them on Saturday, March 7.
During the week, the show to see his HighSchool, the Australian post-punk outfit are set to play Zebulon on Wednesday, March 11, with support from Touching Ice and semiwestern.
Dance Club/DJ Nights
Thursday, March 5, is Supercorn/Dead Diva Disco, a music and performance event at Time + Space in Chinatown. There’s more info on the event page, but the reason for the shout out here is that Nora Keyes, who was featured on this blog a few months ago, and her Italo disco project Tinglez are amongst the performers. Plus, Speed Gallery 666, who has great taste, is the DJ for the evening. There’s no cover, but you can RSVP on Dice.
Saturday night is Dub Club over at the Echoplex with special guest Don Carlos. Over at the Grand Star, Boombox is happening with guest DJs House Shoes and Steve Dub. Down the street, at Melody Lounge, Psicosis is playing Latin sounds from the 1960s and 1970s.
Movie Screenings
Last night, I saw Nirvanna the Band, the Show, the Movie over at Alamo Drafthouse and 100% recommend it to anyone who wants some comic relief right now. Nirvanna the Band, the Show is a Canadian TV show, but you don’t need to be familiar with it to get a kick out of the movie. The premise is that two friends try to pull off elaborate stunts to promote the shows that their band hasn’t booked. In the movie, one of these stunts takes a Back to the Future turn. It’s funny and the way they incorporate guerrilla filmmaking and flashback footage into the film is very clever. The movie is playing at the downtown LA Alamo Drafthouse through next week. It also opens at Vidiots this weekend and is playing a few AMCs and other theaters in the Los Angeles area right now, so check it out if you can.
There are two screenings coming up on Sunday that look fun. Over at Gardena Cinema on March 8 is Welcome to the Grindhouse, which features a pro wrestling match and a horror movie. The event starts at 3:30 p.m. After wrestling, at 7 p.m., there will be a screening of 2013 film Die Die Delta Pi. In Echo Park on Sunday night, Whammy! hosts another Stuck on VHS night. This time, the cassette is Vandemonium, a 1987 comedy special with Ann Magnuson, who will be in the house for a Q&A, Meat Loaf, Eric Bogosian and Joey Arias, along with Magnuson’s 1984 short Made for TV.
Liz O. is an L.A.-based writer and DJ. Follow on Instagram or sign up for the weekly, Beatique newsletter for updates on new stories and gigs.
