Klub Nocturno is back at Catch One this Friday, July 11, and, yes, I’ll be your DJ in the new wave vs. darkwave room, where it will be She Past Away night. There are five rooms for you and your friends to explore at Nocturno, whether your tastes lean towards rock en Español and cumbia, Deftones, reggaeton or banda. Tickets for the 18+ event are available now via Dice, so get yours asap and join us on Friday night. Party starts at 9:30 p.m.
As for the rest of the weekend and early next week, keep reading for my recommendations.
Pearl and the Oysters are playing The Lodge Room on Thursday, July 10, with tickets available through the venue’s website. That same night, 7th House, the film programming wing over at Philosophical Research Society, is screening I Heard It Through the Grapevine, the 1982 documentary following writer James Baldwin as he travels through the U.S. The film was recently restored and isn’t screened all that often, so this should definitely be worth catching. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
On Saturday, July 12, there’s a Joan Crawford triple feature at Academy Museum as part of their “Summer of Camp!” series. This is hagsploitation-era Crawford beginning with the classic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? at 2:30 p.m. and including Straight-Jacket and Trog. Tickets are available on the Academy Museum website. Later on Saturday evening, Chopping Mall is playing at Gardena Cinema and the screening includes both a pre-show meet-and-greet and post-show Q&A with director Jim Wynorski and actor Babara Crampton. Tickets are available online now. If you’re in the mood for dancing on Saturday night, head over to Grand Star Jazz Club, where Decadanse Soiree, the French pop night with DJs Fifi Laroux and Pierot, is happening on the venue’s first floor, and Disintegration, with perksandkisses, is upstairs. Tickets fro Decadanse are available at the door, but there’s a discount if you RSVP on Partiful. Disintegration tickets are available on Eventbrite.
Murder City Devils are playing at The Regent on Sunday, July 13. It’s an early show, with doors at 6 p.m. and the show scheduled to start an hour later. Heading into the week, on Tuesday, July 15, Heavy Manners will be screening documentaries on K Records and Death Row Records, while Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which is on the short list of musicals that don’t make my skin crawl, is playing at Whammy! On Wednesday, July 16, Messer plays Lodge Room, but the best part is that Optometry, the first band interviewed here on Beatique, is opening the night. So, if you’re planning to go to the show, make sure to get there early.
