Klub Nocturno Is Back at Catch One on August 8 + More Happening This Weekend in L.A.

Klub Nocturno flyer Friday, August 8, 2025

Nocturno is back at Catch One (4067 Pico Blvd. 90019) for five rooms of dancing on Friday, August 8. You’ll find me in the darkwave vs. indie sleaze room, which is also where Vilevo is playing live. On top of that, I’ll be playing an extra dose of She Past Away tunes for you throughout the night. Tickets are available now on Dice for this 18+ night.  Check out my set list from last month’s Nocturno and make plans to join us on Friday night.

Here’s what else is happening this weekend and early next week.

Concerts

If you want to hear live music, but don’t have a big budget, your best bet is Thursday, August 7. That’s when Jeff Schroeder + William Cashion (Future Islands) are playing a free show at Zebulonwith Litronix, DPSD and DJ Adam Miller. Meanwhile, Jojo Abot and Say She She are playing a free show over at Skirball Cultural Center. The catch is that it’s first come, first serve, with doors at 6 p.m. *and* Skirball and, really, the only way you can get there is via the 405 or Sepulveda, so you need a high endurance for rush hour traffic to do this. On that same night, Blone Noble and Death Palmz have a low cover show happening over at Slipper Clutch

On Saturday, August 9, Clockshop has a Listening by Moonrise event happening at L.A. State Historic Park with Wadood and The Dude with the Oud. I’ve been to Listening by Moonrise before and it’s a great event for more ambient-leaning, chillout music. The cover is donation-based and proceeds from that, plus merch sales, will benefit Clue’s Detained Immigrant Bond Fund. Also on Saturday, for the ska fans, Western Standard Time, The Untouchables, The Elysians, Blanco y Negro and Mobtown are playing Grand Performances. There’s no cover, but you should probably RSVP.  If you’re into Afrobeat, definitely check out Afro Funké at Levitt Pavilion on Saturday, August 9, which is free and features performances from Blaq Pages, Wazumbians and more.

One more show happening on Saturday is HLLLYH, which is former members of The Mae Shi, with Molly Horses and Kim Free over at The Smell. Low cover. All ages. Starts at 8 p.m.

For the higher-priced concerts coming up, I’d recommend DJ Koze at Grand Park on Saturday, but it’s already sold out. Eh, I didn’t get tickets either. We’ll live. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is at Hollywood Bowl on Sunday and *most* of the cheap seats are gone. By the time you read this, all the cheap seats might be gone. Speaking of Hollywood Bowl, Shannon and the Clams are opening for Alabama Shakes on Wednesday, but if you want to catch them in the headlining spot, maybe get tickets for the Glass House show on Monday, August 11.

Dance Clubs

On Saturday, August 9, you have your choice between The Soul Shakedown with DJs Clifton and Cassandra Dali over at Zebulon, Danse X with Mark Label, Unholy and guest DJ Gina Kuhn at The Monty, Decadanse Soiree with DJs Pierrot and Fifi LaRoux at the Grand Star (downstairs) or Club Disintegration upstairs at The Grand Star.  Sunday, August 10, is Dedicated to You, the Art Laboe tribute night at Footsie’s, and they’ll be celebrating the 100th birthday of the L.A. radio legend. There’s no cover and, yes, you can call or text requests for the night.

Movie Screenings

Alamo Drafthouse’s Way of the Samurai series continues this weekend with Lady Snowblood!!!!!! If you’ve never seen the movie that’s really, really, really influential on Kill Bill, now is your chance. There are multiple screenings over the weekend and into next week, with discount ticket prices on Tuesday.

Over at Philosophical Research Society, S/he Is Still Here, the Genesis P-Orridge documentary, screens on Saturday, while Sun Ra documentary A Joyful Noiseand short film Spaceways play on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, Electric Body Movie, the new EBM documentary featuring DAF, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Daniel Miller and many more, premieres at The Regent. The screening starts at 6:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, August 13, Multiple Maniacs is playing at Brain Dead. It’s classic  John Waters and Divine, so not for the easily offended.

That’s it for this week’s roundup. If you’re one of those types that likes to plan ahead, check out my Discover Los Angeles listings for August 18 – 24.
