With only a handful of gigs left for this year, I figured that now is a good time to post my top 10 jams for 2023. Technically, these aren’t all songs that came out this year, and my top pick I actually started playing in 2022, but they all made an impact on my DJ set in 2023. For one baffling moment, the thought of walking the 1.2 mile stretch of Sunset Blvd. between Spacedust and Bar Henry for Echo Park Rising on Saturday afternoon sounded doable. I quickly came to my senses and vetoed that option, though, on account of it being somewhere around 90 degrees, per the weather app on my phone. Plus, the list of things I wanted to do that day was out of control. So, instead, I stuck around Bar Henry long enough to see Nolune, Micah Preite and Datamaps play fantastic sets on the sidewalk as traffic whizzed past us.

Having a hard time keeping up on L.A. music events? Yeah, same here. But, to try and make it a little easier for people to get out and see what this city has to offer, I wrote up a list of events that I’m interested in attending this week. Sitting on the corner of Main and Cesar Chavez is the Italian Hall, a squat, two-story brick building that dates back to 1908. In the early 20th century, it welcomed guest speakers like Emma Goldman and Ricardo and Enrique Flores Magón. During Prohibition, it hid a speakeasy. Today, it’s part of El Pueblo de Los Angeles, the historic district that include’s some of the oldest remaining buildings in the city, and is home to the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles.

Thanks to everyone who came out to Underground for Gorillaz x Daft Punk night on August 11. I’ll be back with Larry G. on Friday, August 18 at Underground. Our first Disco Matinee in July was a success, so Jus’ B and I are heading back to Grand Star Jazz Club on Sunday, August 6 for another round. Blur has a new album, The Ballad of Darren, out and we’re celebrating at Club Underground on Friday, July 28. Join Larry G. and me, Liz O., at Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown for Underground’s Pulp x Blur night. Both floors of the club will be open. You’ll get your fill of Pulp and Blur, plus an assortment of indie and Britpop jams, downstairs. I’ll be upstairs playing a mix of post-punk, indie dance, new wave, darkwave, electro and synthpop jams.
