This Friday, April 10, is ‘90s Nite at Club Underground— think Britpop, Björk and Trainspotting— and both floors of Grand Star Jazz Club will be open. Larry G. and I will be your DJ for the night and it should be a good one. Advance tickets are available now, so get yours as soon as you can I’ll see you on the dance floor this Friday night. Party starts at 9:30 p.m. and it’s 21+.
As for the rest of the weekend and early next week, here are my recommendations.
Concerts
With Coachella happening in the desert, it’s a pretty big week for shows in L.A. As for a the Coachella-related Goldenvoice shows happening in town, most I’m not recommending here because the prices for available tickets are stupid. The only one I am recommending isn’t a cheap ticket, but it also isn’t a totally ridiculous one. Thursday night is French Police at The Fonda, with Freak Slug opening. I DJed a few French Police shows in 2025 and the last of those shows, at the Novo in October, was the best of them, just a top-tier, energetic performance, so I definitely think that right now is a very good time to catch the band if you haven’t seen them live yet.
As for the shows not related to Coachella, shoegaze fans should definitely catch Maria Somerville at the Lodge Room on Thursday, April 9. I saw her at Zebulon last year and it was a fantastic show. A bonus is that the tickets are under $30, with the service fees. If you do go, bring earplugs. I’m 100% serious about this.
On Saturday, April 11, Rocketship, who is touring in support of the 30th anniversary of their debut album A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness, will be at Teragram Ballroom and old school goth bands The Bolshoi Brothers (aka The Bolshoi) and Theatre of Hate play The Regent. Also happening on Saturday night is The Spyrals at Oblivion with Izzy Outerspace, High Tatras and Ann Eliza.
Sunday, April 12, at the Getty Center is Poetry in the Garden, which is a day of poetry and music performances. It’s free and N8NOFACE is amongst those participating. For tickets, which you’ll need even though it’s free, go to the Getty’s website. If you’re closer to downtown on Sunday, head over to Los Angeles State Historic park for Bob Baker Day. Very Be Careful and San Cha are amongst the artists on the bill. Plus, there will be puppets. Lots of puppets. It’s free, but RSVP.
Next week, on Wednesday, April 15, free speech champion Afroman is playing at The Regent.
Clubs/DJ Events
For funk and disco, enter the Boogieverse with V Fresh and Deejay Clifton at Sid’s Bar on Thursday, April 9.
On Saturday, April 11, Decadanse is back at Grand Star Jazz Club with DJs Pierrot and Fifi Laroux playing French pop on vinyl.
Sunday is Incense and Peppermints at The Monty with Steve Skeletal playing ’60s, ’70s and ’80s rock.
Next Tuesday, April 14, Röyksopp heads to the DJ booth at Sound. It’s part of the Seven Days of Framework series happening at the venue and, imho, the one that’s most worth catching.
Movies
We have two movie nerd things happening in L.A. this weekend. The indie-centric Los Angeles Festival of Movies runs from April 9 through April 12 with screenings at 2220 Arts + Archives, Vidiots, Now Instant Image Hall and Philosophical Research Society. Festival passes are sold out, but it looks like tickets are available for at least some of the screenings.
Meanwhile, Brain Dead Fantasy Fest is happening this weekend with events at Brain Dead Studios on Fairfax and the Ukrainian Cultural Center. This is more of a multi-genre, multi-media event with classic fantasy films, live music, gaming tournaments, etc. I’d follow Brain Dead on Instagram for more details on the schedule.
Liz O. is an L.A.-based writer and DJ. Follow on Instagram or sign up for the weekly, Beatique newsletter for updates on new stories and gigs.
Listen to Beatique, April 2026 on Mixcloud, featuring music from Slayyyter, Kneecap, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Armand Van Helden and more.
