It’s a big week for Brian Jonestown Massacre fans in L.A. The psychedelic band is playing two nights at Teragram Ballroom and, while the show on Saturday, November 22, is totally sold out, there are still tickets available to see them on Sunday, November 23.
In addition, there are two related film screenings happening within the next week. On Saturday, November 22, Dig! XX, the 20th anniversary of the cult classic Brian Jonestown Massacre/Dandy Warhols documentary screens at Brain Dead Studios with Joel Gion of the band on hand for a Q/A session with moderator Yasi Salek of Bandsplain Podcast. Over at Philosophical Research Society on Tuesday, November 25, you can catch the world premiere of God Is My Girlfriend, a BJM jam session filmed in 2010 that has not been screened in a theater until now. Members of the band will be at the premiere as well.
Keep reading for more happening around town between today, November 20, and next Wednesday, November 26.
Concerts
On Thursday night, local indie band Ramonda Hammer, who recently released the EP Wake Up, Play Nice, and Oakland/L.A. band Pillowprincewill be at The Goldfish in Highland Park on Thursday, November 20, and at The Sardine in San Pedro on Friday, November 21. Over at The Wiltern on Thursday, Cap ’n Jazz headlines a lineup that also includes Chat Pile, The Red Krayola, Rainer Maria, Anthony Family and guest DJs.
Saturday night, Boris and Lack of Interest are at Belasco. For a more budget-friendly, darkwave-leaning show on Saturday night, Mellow Code and Sleek Teeth play The Goldfish with DJ Sulkform on the decks.
Heading into next week, it looks like there are still a good amount of tickets left to catch The Mars Volta at Pasadena Civic, plus, the prices are pretty decent for a band of that caliber.
DJ Nights
Get the weekend started a little early with Mosaics on Thursday, November 20, at Highland Park Brewery. Jimmy Tamborello, Hoseh and Benji Knight are on the decks. They always have vinyl heat in store. Music starts at 4:20 p.m. and HPB is a very short walk from the Chinatown A Line station, so it’s a good pit stop for those of you who work around downtown.
Head back down to Chinatown on Friday night, where you’ve got Club Underground with Larry G. playing indie, Britpop, new wave, darkwave and more at Grand Star Jazz Club, Darone Sassounian and Lara Sarkissian playing a B2B set with SWANA disco, funk and more over at Homage Brewing and Chulita Vinyl Club playing freestyle, Hi-NRG, disco and house at Apothéke. The Grand Star and Homage are walking distance from each other and Apothéke is a longer walk, or a very short drive, so you can hit up all three parties on Friday night.
Saturday night is The Soul Shakedown with Clifton Weaver playing soul, funk, disco and more over at Zebulon and there’s no cover.
For the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Deep heads to the Lodge Room with Oveous, Marques Wyatt, Jeremy Sole and Big Cee. Meanwhile, Armen Miran and Chambord play Clinic Wednesdays at Jungle and Dub Club takes over the Echoplex with a special performance from Sister Nancy.
(And, in case you were wondering, my next gig is Friday, November 28, at Klub Nocturno. Tickets are available now on Dice.)
Other Events
Union Station’s tree lighting ceremony is on Thursday, November 20, with the retro vocal group The Beverly Belles playing live. It’s a free event, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., and really a fun way to kick back for a little bit if your commute takes you through Union Station.
Philosophical Research Society, one of my favorite places in Los Angeles, is having its annual courtyard sale and benefit raffle on Saturday, November 22. In addition to the marketplace, there will be free events and workshops at the center and the auction helps raise $$$ for PRS’ eclectic programming, which includes everything from classes to film screenings.
