Sextile, Wolf Alice and More Happening in L.A. 10/09 – 10/15

Sextile Yes, Please album cover

Trying to find something to do in Los Angeles this weekend? I know, it’s rough. I just spent too long combing through Instagram feeds and screencapping flyers that have yet to pop up on my feed. Still, there are places to go and bands to see. In fact, I’m a little surprised to see that some shows, like Sextile at The Novo on Saturday, October 11, and Wolf Alice at the Wiltern on Monday, October 13, still have tickets left. There are also loads of movies screenings, a few great dance nights, a comedy show for a really good cause and lots more, so keep reading and share this with any pals who might be interested. All the events here are happening in Los Angeles sometime between Thursday, October 9, and Wednesday, October 15.

Concerts

Let’s start with the shows. Icelandic band múm is back and they’re playing The Regent on Thursday, October 9. Meanwhile, over at Slipper Clutch, is an event called Punxanimal with 10 bands (IDK who) playing punk covers, plus DJs Unholy and Esli on the decks. There’s no cover and it’s basically walking distance from The Regent, so you might want to pop in if you’re going to the múm show and you’re old enough to get into a bar. That same night, down in Long Beach, Dengue Fever is playing Alex’s Bar.

For the indie pop heads, Mates of State is playing Moroccan Lounge on Friday, October 10. On Saturday, Las Cafeteras brings their Hasta La Muerte show to The Ford and, like I mentioned earlier, Sextile is at The Novo. Closing out the weekend is Mekons, who are playing an afternoon show at Gold-Diggers on Sunday, October 12.

Heading into next week, Wolf Alice is at The Wiltern on Monday, October 13, Pinback is at The Fonda on Tuesday, October 14, and Nation of Language plays the same venue the following night.

Clubs

I’m not DJing this week, but recommend that you head down to Club Underground at Grand Star Jazz Club on Friday night and Decadanse Soiree at the same venue on Saturday night, October 11. Also happening on Saturday night is The Offbeat’s 11th anniversary party with DJs Alex Transistor, Argot and Scarlett Casanova, plus a live performance from Bauhaus tribute band eyeliner. Sunday, at The Offbeat, is the Halloween Drag Brunch.

Movies

The Natural History Museum has a film series, “Cool Cats and Bad Kitties,” that kicks off on Thursday, October 9 with The Shadow of the Cat. The series coincides with the museum’s current exhibition Fierce! The Story of Cats. Also screening on Thursday is Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre at Philosophical Research Society

Gardena Cinema has a special double-feature happening on Friday, October 10, with Frankenhooker and Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. Saturday, October 11, is Ha Ha Horror!, the 12-hour 16 mm movie marathon happening at Brain Dead Studios. Speaking of 16 mm, on Sunday, you can catch a 16mm screening of the 1965 Mexican horror anthology film 100 Cries of Terror at Philosophical Research Society

Next week, luchador film The Champions of Justice plays on Monday night at Vidiots, with a special intro from Book of Life director Jorge Gutierrez. And, on multiple nights, at multiple theaters, you can catch Satoshi Kon’s pop idol thriller Perfect Blue or 25th anniversary re-release of Battle Royale

Other events

If you love comedy and animals, Wallis Annenberg PetSpace is hosting a Stand Up for Pets comedy event, headlined by Caroline Rhea, on Wednesday, October 15. It’s a dog-friendly event and a portion of the proceeds benefit the PetSpace Extraordinary Care Fund. PetSpace does a lot of great work to bring together people and animals. Check out their website for more information on the organization and for animals that are currently adoptable.
