Remember the Tomata du Plenty art show that I wrote about here on Beatique back in August? Tomata, the retrospective of work from the late artist and frontman for seminal L.A. punk band the Screamers, closes at MutMuz Gallery in Chinatown on Friday, September 19. There will be a closing party on Friday night, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. If you haven’t seen the show, or you want to see it again, I highly recommend going to the closing event.
After the closing party, hit up Club Underground at Grand Star Jazz Club, which is right across Hill Street from MutMuz. (The gallery is on Chung King Road, Grand Star is in Central Plaza, Hill Street runs between the two plazas.) I’m not DJing this week, but it’s still going to be a vibe with Larry G. on the decks all night playing indie, Britpop, post-punk and more. Tickets are available at the door, or in advance via Dice or Eventbrite.
As for more of what’s happening this weekend and early next week, keep reading. (And my next gig, in case you’re wondering, is Nocturno at Catch One on September 26.)
Concerts
This week is a little light on concerts that I think are relevant to people reading this. The show I would most recommend is an audiovisual performance that should be amazing. Edan and Cut Chemist will be performing live at a screening of “Songs You Can See- Spacedust,” a collaboration between Edan and EXP TV’s Tom Fitzgerald, at Philosophical Research Society. Tickets are available now via Eventbrite.
I’d recommend checking out Castle Rat at Zebulon on Sunday night because I’ve been wanting to check out their live show, but it’s already sold out. That said, I’ll also mention that on Monday night, you have your choice between Psychedelic Furs and Gary Numan at the Greek Theatre or The Raveonettes and Poppy Jean Crawford at Teragram Ballroom.
Dance Clubs
If you’re in Long Beach on Friday night and need a good dose of funk and soul on vinyl, The Good Foot is celebrating its 27th anniversary over at Alex’s Bar. Saturday night, at Zebulon with a bash at Alex’s Bar.
On Saturday night, Discotchari is throwing a pre-release party for their forthcoming Iranian diaspora pop compilation Tehrangeles Vice at Zebulon. Joining Discotchari on the decks is KCRW’s Nassir Nassirzadeh. There’s no cover.
Movies
I’ve never heard of Suroh — Alien Hitchhiker, but trust the tastes of Cathode Cinema, who is presenting the screening at 2220 Arts + Archives on Thursday, September 18. If you’re looking for something weird to get your weekend started, I’d head there.
The big, nerdy screening event this weekend is Twin Peaks: The Return at The Egyptian. On Friday, September 19, American Cinematheque is showing episodes 1-4. Episodes 5-11 play on Saturday night and the series concludes with episodes 12- 18 on Sunday, September 21.
On Friday, Philosophical Research Society puts the spotlight on Night Flight, which I contend is 100% worth a paid subscription, with a screening of the 1976 film Tunnel Vision, plus a Night Flight supercut presented by founder Stuart Shapiro, who will also be on hand for a Q&A session.
If you don’t have to be at a desk or anything on Tuesday, September 23, check out Movie Hooky Club at the Michelle and Kevin Douglas IMAX Theatre at USC. I’ve been to a Movie Hooky Club screening before and it’s a super fun afternoon. Next week, they’ll be showing Tamala 2021: A Punk Cat in Space.
Wednesday night, head back to Philosophical Research Society for Bubble Bath. This is a wild Hungarian animated music from 1980. I have seen this before and it’s a wonderful film that’s definitely worth the evening traffic on Los Feliz Blvd. Tickets are on Eventbrite.
And, whenever you have the chance, check out Let There Be Gwar at Beyond the Streets. The gallery is open on Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Whether you’re a metalhead, a fan of practical effects or just someone who loves the weird side of art and pop culture, you’ll dig the show.
