Mayor Bass finally lifted the curfew that was thrust upon downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday, so this weekend is a really good time to support the venues who were impacted by the 8 p.m. shutdown. Over at the Grand Star in Chinatown, Club Tenderness is on Thursday, June 19. Underground is still happening on Friday, but note that Underground’s Pulp Party has been moved to Friday, July 18. Saturday, 6/21, is Club Disintegration downstairs at the Grand Star and ‘80s Night upstairs.
Elsewhere downtown, Jesika Von Rabbit is playing her album release show for Bunnywood Babylon at Redwood Bar. Show is at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 20. On Saturday, June 21, there will be a northern soul party over at Hello Stranger in Little Tokyo with all-vinyl DJs, plus record vendors on site. It starts at 9 p.m. and there’s no cover. Over at The Stowaway on Saturday is Black2Black, a Juneteenth house and techno party. Back in Chinatown on Saturday night, Noche Romantica is happening at Melody Lounge. Shows are happening all weekend at Slipper Clutch, so check their Instagram for more information. To find out what’s happening at The Mermaid, check their stories on Instagram daily. The same goes for The Escondite.
Outside of downtown, there are a few other worthwhile events happening. This weekend is Philosophical Research Society’s Yesterday L.A. celebration of local history, which includes a screening of the 1973 concert film Wattstax on Friday night, plus a symposium on Saturday that includes presentations from Museo de Valle, Charles Phoenix and more. The screening of Los Angeles Plays Itself on Sunday is already sold out.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space is screening on Saturday at Gardena Cinema and the event, hosted by composer John Massari, will include a live performance from The Dickies. Saturday at 6:30 p.m. is La Bamba at Vidiots with Lou Diamond Philips, Irma Norton and Merrick Morton in attendance. Advance tickets are already gone, so you’ll have to see if you can get one of the few walk-up tickets available. Box office opens 45 minutes before showtime.
