  • The Tricky Thing About Vinyl DJ Gigs + Set List from Footsie’s 5/16/26

Fontaines D.C. Romance on vinyl in DJ booth at Footsies in Los Angeles (Photo: Liz Ohanesian)
The last song of the night at Footsies, “Favourite” by Fontaines D.C.

It’s pretty rare that I play vinyl sets these days, but, last night, I packed up two record bags to play at Footsie’s for my pal Malvada’s party, Acid Rain. It was a good night. The rumor I heard while standing next to speakers was “blah blah blah punk show blah blah blah shut down” and so a bunch of people headed over to the bar instead. Footsie’s was packed, roughly, from 11 p.m. until the lights came on and the last note of the last song (Fontaines D.C. “Favourite”) played.

Vinyl is tricky to DJ for a lot of reasons, but the one reason people don’t really mention is that it’s a challenge to play a vinyl set that doesn’t sound retro. A lot of times, retro is the goal of the party, so it works. If you’re just playing a general alt/indie/whatever set on vinyl, that’s not the case. It happens, though, because used ‘80s records are still plentiful in L.A. shops and new vinyl releases, when you can find them, are pricy relative to what DJs actually make. (Also, there are people who get really rude when you don’t play KROQ’s greatest hits of 1986, but we’ll save that rant for another day.)

Point being, I usually only buy new releases on vinyl when they’ve become my personal favorites and when I feel like I can play them out at some DJ gigs. In the past few weeks, I picked up copies of the latest albums from ADULT., Dry Cleaning and Kneecap, so those all made it into last night’s set.

The upside of vinyl, at least for a DJ who has been around for a minute, is that you’ll inevitably come across some records that you haven’t played in a long time, or, maybe, ever. I pulled The Faint’s Danse Macabre for last night’s gig because, back when it came out, at least five songs off it were hits at the clubs where I DJed. It actually is an important album for the early 2000s, but one that’s been overlooked in the years since. The Bloc Party song in last night’s set, “Tulips,” is one I probably haven’t played since the ‘00s. IDK why.

Set list for last night is below. Songs from the past year or so link to other references here on Beatique.

  • Slayyyter “I’m Actually Kinda Famous” + Underground Set List 5/08/26

Slayyyter Worst Girl in America album cover
Cover for Wor$t Girl in America by Slayyyter

I’ve been trying out songs from Wor$t Girl in America since the new album from Slayyyter came out a handful of weeks ago. So far, the songs have done pretty well, but last night, “I’m Actually Kinda Famous” kinda popped on the dance floor. TBH, it was a song that I had been thinking about playing since the album came out, but I wasn’t sure if I could make it work. But, hey, you gotta take some chances in life and your DJ sets.

Anyhow, last night I was DJing at Club Underground. (I know I said I wasn’t DJing this weekend. Surprise!) It was somewhere after midnight. Sextile “S Is For” (also on this month’s mix) was playing and people were getting really into it, especially a group near the DJ booth. I mixed in Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Heads Will Roll,” the A-Trak remix, and that group by me screamed and danced even harder. I thought, okay, if they’re down with Sextile *and* Yeah Yeah Yeahs remixed by A-Trak, they’re my people and probably already into Slayyyter. So, I slowed down “Heads Will Roll” a pinch, sped up “I’m Actually Kinda Famous” a lot and mixed them thinking, this is either going to suck or it’s going to slayyy. I guess the latter happened because the group I had been eyeing was now all over the dance floor and other group at the back of the dance floor started jumping up and down and screaming for the song.

Anyhow, kids, the moral of the day is to go with your gut and make it work. Here’s the set list from last night. Songs from the past year or so are in bold and link back to other other mentions on this here blog.

  • Listen to the May 2026 Edition of Beatique

    Beatique May 2024 mix cover

The May, 2026 edition of Beatique is up on Mixcloud right now and I hope you’ll give it a listen. This month’s set includes a few current club hits from the likes of Sextile, Fcukers and Alice Glass, an electroclash throwback and a big ol’ ‘90s club banger. There are also a couple 1960s/early ‘70s jams and new tunes from Tomora, Kneecap, Fontaines D.C. and more.

  • Depeche Mode, Fontaines D.C. and War Child: The Wars Change, But the Protest Songs Remain the Same

Photo of antiwar protestors in front of Los Angeles City Hall on March 7, 2026 (Photo: Liz Ohanesian)

As the Santa Ana winds whipped through Los Angeles, downtown protestors clung to signs that read, “Invest in peace not the Pentagon” and “War crimes don’t hide sex crimes.” A string of activists spoke on the steps of City Hall. They led us in a run of chants all of which could be summarized in one point: end the wars.

Before walking to the Saturday afternoon protest, I listened toHelp (2), the War Child compilation album that came out on Friday, for the second or third time. On it, Depeche Mode covers “Universal Soldier,” written by Buffy Sainte-Marie in the early 1960s. It’s a striking condemnation of war made all the more ominous when performed as a dark, synthpop song. Listen closely and you might swear you hear jets in the background. Even if you’re only playing the song in the background, you can’t miss the resignation in Dave Gahan’s voice when he delivers the closing line, “this is not the way we put the end to war.”

  • Chromatics, Chumbawamba + More of What You Heard at Club Underground 1/16/26

Played the second half of the night in the Underground room for Club Underground x Synthwaves last night. Fantastic crowd, as always. Got in a nod to David Lynch with a remix of Chromatics’ song “Shadow.” Didn’t play anything extremely new, but did get in some of last year’s faves, like Sextile “Rearrange” and Confidence Man and Jade “Gossip.” Dropped in “Tubthumping” near the end for a reason. Heed the wisdom of Chumbawamba, friends. Set list is below. New-ish stuff links back to other mentions on this blog.

  • Kneecap, Pulp, Confidence Man and More of What You Heard at Underground on 12/05/25

    Kneecap "H.O.O.D." (2025 Remix) cover
Frankly, I’m impressed by how many of you know all the words to “H.O.O.D.”

Thank you to everyone who made it out to Underground last night and for all the birthday wishes. I’ve always been pretty low maintenance about birthdays just because mine competes with Christmas parties (and competed with finals back when I was in school). So, I learned the best thing to do is book a DJ gig the weekend of my birthday and say, “I’m playing here, if you want to come by and say hi.” I’m always pleasantly surprised by who I see. Anyhow, outside of this playlist and one really short and shaky video for the ‘gram, I don’t have much documentation, so you’ll just have to trust me when I saw it was a vibe.

As usual, the set list is below. Songs released in 2025 are in bold and link back to other references to the band on Beatique. And, before I sign off, tickets for New Year’s Eve at Club Underground are already available on Dice and Eventbrite. Two floors of indie, Britpop, darkwave, post-punk dancing all night. Get your tickets asap.

  • New Saint Etienne and Everything Else You Heard at Underground on 11/14/25

    Saint Etienne International album cover
Cover of International, the final album from Saint Etienne

Had been meaning to get “Save It for a Rainy Day,” from the latest Saint Etienne album, into my club sets for a good minute. It was sort of appropriate that the first time I played it out was at Underground last night, on account of the rain and all. The whole album, International, is fantastic. It’s also Saint Etienne’s final album, so do pick it up when you have a chance.

I forgot to take pics. It’s okay, we can use our imagination. Shout out to the handful of people who were on the dance floor for nearly the entire night and to the Kneecap fans who know all the words to “H.O.O.D.” I was impressed. Set list is below. The new-ish stuff is in bold and links to other mentions of the artists on this site.

  • Ora the Molecule and More of What You Heard at Club Underground on 10/24/25

Ora the Molecule live at El Cid in Los Angeles on May 15, 2025 (Photo: Liz Ohanesian)
I didn’t take pics at Underground last night, so here’s one of Ora the Molecule at El Cid back in May. (Pic: Liz O.)

Someone asked about a song I played at Club Underground last night and I wasn’t sure what it was at the time, but it was probably “Nobody Cares” by Ora the Molecule, since it was the only new song in that chunk of time. Also, people have asked about it elsewhere recently. It’s my favorite song on, Dance Therapy, the latest album from Ora the Molecule (who, for those reading in L.A. on Saturday, is playing at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater’s costume ball tonight) and it’s been doing really well on the dance floor. I’m guessing it’s because the song is true— “Oh, you’re feeling weird?/ Well, guess what/Nobody cares.”

Anyhow, I played the second half of the night and the set list is below. The 2025 releases are in bold and link back to other mentions on this lil’ blog. Don’t forget to snag yourself a ticket or two or more for Club Underground’s Halloween Party.

  • “My Favourite for a Long Time”: Fontaines D.C. and Everything Else You Heard at Underground 10/10/25

    Fontaines D.C. Romance Album cover

The last song at Underground last night was “Favourite” by Fontaines D.C. and, when I saw people singing along, I thought finally. Romance has been out for over a year now. It was my favorite album of 2024. It was a lot of people’s favorite album of last year. Both Larry and I have been playing multiple tracks off the album since it came out, and we were both playing Fontaines D.C. before Romance, but it wasn’t until this past summer that I really started to see the band hit with the indie club crowd here in L.A. Back in the pre-algorithm days, that would have been really unusual, but now it’s kind of normal. A band can meet all the metrics by which it would be considered successful, like award nominations and sold-out shows, and people still don’t know who they are because their “personalized” feeds are really just regurgitating nostalgia content based on basic demographic info and passive likes, served with a dollop of hot takes on Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter to make you feel like you know what’s happening in the world.

What I’m saying is that the internet is making us sad and uncool, so go out to a real club and dance to the music that real people put together into sets that would baffle Spotify. Dance to the new stuff. If you don’t know it this week, you’ll know it next week.

Anyhow, here’s last night’s set list, which includes new music The New Eves, Gorillaz (with Sparks), Alice Glass and more, plus a few oldies that I haven’t played in a really long time, like “Cupid Boy” from Kylie Minogue’s best album, the Scissor Sisters/Mylo mashup and probably some other tunes. All 2025 releases are in bold and link back to other references here on the blog.

Oh, before we get to the set list, be sure to pick up tickets for Halloween at Club Underground. Both floors of Grand Star Jazz Club will be open on Friday, October 31, and there will be a costume contest.

  • Amyl and the Sniffers, Lambrini Girls and More of What You Heard at Harvard & Stone on 10/02/25

Amyl and the Sniffers Cartoon Darkness cover

Played a rock set at Harvard and Stone on Thursday night. It was a mix of music from, basically, the 1960s to today. Got everyone from The Stooges to Lambrini Girls in it. No, I didn’t get to see Lambrini Girls on Wednesday night, unfortunately. The videos I saw were pretty wild. I’m a little jealous of everyone who did go. Anyhow, here’s the set list.
