Maybe you recall reading about Swimming Bell here on Beatique back in May. That’s when L.A.-based singer/songwriter Katie Schottland and her band of musicians celebrated the release of the latest Swimming Bell EP, Somnia, with a very intimate show at Oblivion in Highland Park. If you missed the story, go back and read it because Swimming Bell is fantastic and you can catch them on Thursday, July 25, at The Goldfish in Highland Park, where they’ll be playing alongside The GDR and Love Pig for a very low cover. Tickets are available now on Dice for this 21+ show. Check out Swimming Bell’s video for “95 at Night” too.
For those of you who lean more towards the darker side of music, Gitane Demone and Paul Roessler are playing Slipper Clutch with CrowJane and others. I don’t have much info on the show, except that it’s 21+ and starts at 8 p.m., so follow The Slipper Clutch for more details. Friday, July 25, is Kontravoid at The Regent and there are still tickets available for that. On Saturday, July 26, Dustbowlchampion and Casket Cassette play The Paramount, while Becky and the Birds play The Echo and The Mekons play Lodge Room. There’s a low ticket alert for The Mekons show, so act fast if you want to go. Also happening on Saturday is GLOAM at Non Plus Ultra with Dildox, More Ephemerol, Blone Noble, Acidtrain, Klypi, Duderella, Nervous Gender and Chaki the Funk Wizard. Oh, and if there wasn’t enough happening on Saturday night, Pussycow is celebrating their 20th anniversary at The Escondite. They play at 9:45 p.m., so it’s a pretty early show. Fartbarf is at The Escondite on Sunday, July 27. Tuesday, July 29, is the second of Deltron 3030’s two shows at The Bellwether. The first night of their 25th anniversary performance is already sold out.
On the dance club front, I am not DJing this week, which is good because, frankly, I’m a little tired from last weekend’s gigs and juggling work deadlines. So, while I catch up on sleep, you should be dancing. Larry G. is in the DJ booth at Club Underground at the Grand Star on Friday night. Saturday night is Club Synth at The Stowaway. It’s two rooms with a bill that includes DJs that includes Cabslays, Dark Crystal, Tommy Drayk and more. Sunday, July 27, is Bears in Space, the flagship party from the super awesome DJ team of the same name (aka Chris Bowen and Victor Rodriguez). They’ll be playing alongside Prosumer, Stacy Christine and Perfect Lovers over at Akbar starting at 3 p.m.
As for movie screenings, there are kind of a lot of screenings coming up, so let’s narrow it down. On Thursday, July 24, The UCLA Library Punk Collective presents Lovedolls Superstar at Brain Dead Studios. It’s a 1986 film starring punk luminaries like Chuck Dukowski and Jello Biafra. If you’re looking for camp classics, take your pick on Friday, when Pink Flamingos plays on 16mm at The Frida , while, over at Vidiots, Barbarella plays in the Eagle Theatre and Vegas in Space plays in the Mubi Microcinema. (Vegas in Space plays on Saturday too.) There are Miyazaki movies (The Boy and the Heron, Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises) at The Ford throughout the weekend. The Eyes of Laura Mars, which is amazing, is playing at Vidiots on Sunday, Black Christmas is at Los Feliz 3 on Monday and Lady Snowblood is at Brain Dead on Wednesday.
