Pulp x Blur Night at Underground, Dum Dum Fest and More Happening This Weekend

I have two DJ gigs coming up this weekend and hope to see some of you at one, or maybe both, of them. On Friday, June 26, I’m back at Club Underground *and* it’s a Pulp x Blur 2 Room Dance party, so you’ll get one room with Pulp, Blur and the indie, Britpop and ‘90s bangers, plus another room with post-punk, indie, electro, dance, etc. Larry G. And I are DJing all night. Party starts at 9:30 p.m. at Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown and it’s 21+. Tickets are available now.

Saturday, June 27, is Dum Dum Fest at The Echo with Past Self, Drag Talk, Taleen Kali, Lord Friday the 13th, Sunder and Kit Major. I’m playing in between bands for the first half of the night, so get there early. Doors open at 6 p.m. and it’s all ages. Tickets are available now.

As for the rest of the weekend and early next week, here are my recommendations.

Concerts

For the ‘90s fans, Smoking Popes and Nerfherder are co-headlining at Zebulon on Thursday, June 25. Plan to head back to the Frogtown venue on Sunday, June 28, when local rockers Julez and the Rollerz celebrate the release of their debut full-length, Dirty Little Rock ’n’ Roller. Then, on Tuesday, catch Patrick Wolf, who will be back in town and playing over at the Lodge Room in Highland Park.

Dance Clubs/DJ Nights

If you’re World Cup-crazy right now, but still want to hit the dance floor, check out the Copa del Rave residency that’s happening at Academy and Exchange. They’re hosting watch parties/DJ nights throughout the tournament. On Thursday, you can catch Turkey vs. USA at Academy LA with DJs Soraya and Life on Planets. Next week, they’ll have the Mexico vs. TBD party on Tuesday, June 30, and USA vs. TBD on Wednesday, July 1. Check the Copa del Rave website for the schedule. Also happening this weekend-ish is city pop night Dress Down with DJ Tsugu Itagaki over at The Let’s Go! in the Arts District on Thursday, June 25.

Movies

Between June 25 and 28, Guillermo del Toro will be at the Academy Museum to screen and talk about a bunch of Alfred Hitchcock films. These include Notorious on Thursday night and North by Northwest on Saturday afternoon. They’re all sold out but the museum sometimes releases more on the morning of the event and standby tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis. The one event that I’m bummed I won’t be able to attend is the Dark Shadows 60th anniversary screening at the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater on Saturday. If you go, please tell me about it. And, on Sunday, Whammy! is hosting their final screening at the shop’s current location on Sunset Blvd. It’s Forever Evil on VHS. The video store will be moving to 1200 N. Alvarado next month. Also on Sunday, Philosophical Research Society hosts the US theatrical premiere of 1974 Estonian film Colourful Dreams

Other Events:

This weekend is the first El Pueblo de Los Angeles Heritage Festival. There will be food, art and music and it’s free. If you’re going to be at Union Station for World Cup Fan Zone events, definitely plan to stop by. It’s just across Alameda from the train station.

Saturday is the return of Analog Outlaw at 2220 Arts + Archives. This is a fantastic counterculture/subculture physical media fair that you should check out. (Check out my story about Analog Outlaw from last year for more info.) Also happening on Saturday is Octavia’s Solstice, celebrating the birth date of Octavia Butler, at Philosophical Research Society.

Next week, PRS launches a monthlong series of talks on the themes in David Lynch’s work with David Lynch’s Los Angeles on July 1.
