Ora the Molecule live at El Cid in Silver Lake on May 15, 2025 was an inspiration for the first half of this set. (Pic: Liz O.)
Earlier this month, I caught Ora the Molecule play at El Cid in Silver Lake. It was such a fun show. The crowd grooved throughout the duration of her set and, by the end, had formed a conga line that snaked around the small dance floor. Ora the Molecule is Norwegian DJ Nora Schielderup’s Italo disco alter, a theremin-playing intergalactic Raffaella Carrà whose songs are simultaneously cheeky and sincere. My favorite off her latest album, Dance Therapy, is “Nobody Cares,” a sentiment I find more liberating than depressing.

It’s time for another Beatique Mix. The April 2025 edition of this mix series includes new music from Mark Lane, Night Ritualz, Marie Davidson, Model/Actriz, The Horrors, French Police and more. It also includes a few classic cuts from the likes of Kittin and the Hacker, Joy Division and others.
One thing that I want to stress is that these aren’t club mixes, even if they partially sound very clubby. The Beatique Mix series is a reflection of the music that’s been in my head for the past month, regardless of genre or vibe or whatever. For the April mix, specifically, I had transportation in mind, which explains the first three songs, as well as the last one. The photo for this mix is of the 110 freeway as seen from an L.A. Metro J Line stop.
If you want to hear my club sets, then you have to go to the gigs. Click this link to see where I’m playing next.
On Sunday night, when I was DJing at The Mermaid for Splash! I mixed together “Cherry” from Chromatics with “Drums of Death,” from FKA Twigs’ latest album, and Mareux’s songs “DTLA.” It was one of those impromptu things that I really liked and I made a mental note to keep that in mind for future sets.
The following morning, I woke up with the Dinner In America song still stuck in my head. I had to do something to get it out, so I pulled those three songs and built a set around it, opening and closing the set with two other frequent earworms. It did the trick, at least for now, and I liked it enough to post it for this month’s Beatique Mix. Also included in this set are Taleen Kali’s cover of My Bloody Valentine’s song “Cupid Come,” from her new EP, and “Bon Voyage,” from Optometry’s new album, Lemuria. Track list is below. Enjoy!
Like colds, earworms spread pretty easily. And it was an earworm that I caught from my husband— “El Rey y Yo” by Los Angeles Negros— that inspired this mix. It’s more of an old school college radio-style set than a club set and that’s by design. If you want to hear my club sets, you can go to the clubs. This is for listening when you’re at work or in the car or doing dishes or whatever.
The Beatique 2024 Year End Mix is here. I recorded a live set at home featuring songs from all of the albums featured on my Best Albums of 2024 list, plus a few of the bangers that made their way into my DJ sets this year. I didn’t want to rank club hits this year, but there are four songs that really stood out for the crowd reaction that they get. Those are: French Police “Her”; Twin Tribes “Sangre de Oro”; Blood Club “No Quiero Bailar”; Glass Spells “Hechizos.” All four songs are on this mix. There are also a couple songs that actually came out in 2023, but turned up in my sets this year, so I figured those were worth including as well.
But, this isn’t a club mix. Think of it more like a college radio show without the mumbly airbreaks. There are some more ambient tracks, rock songs, etc. in here as well. The mix is a little over an hour-and-a-half, so put it on whenever you have time to listen and, if you like it, share it. Thanks for listening and, for those of you in L.A., I hope to see you at Underground’s New Year’s Eve party on Tuesday night. Scroll down for the set list.
It’s been a while, but I finally made a new Beatique mix. It’s a bunch of relatively new music, a mix of indie, darkwave and synthpop with a touch of shoegaze. I’d say more, but DJs talking about DJing is boring af, which is why I hate Threads. Anyhow, give the mix a listen here or on Mixcloud. Share it if you like it. Turn it up (all the way up) in the office or car or wherever if you really like it. Set list is below.
I finally had some time to make a new Beatique Mix. This one is shorter than usual, but the tunes cross genre from Italo disco to dub, so it’s a fun one. At least, it was a fun one to make. Listen here or head over to Mixcloud, where you can check out any of the 80 (!!!) sets that I’ve posted over the past few years.
It took a while to get this recording on to Mixcloud, but you can now hear the first hour of my set from Club Underground for Gorillaz x Daft Punk night, recorded live at Grand Star Jazz Club on August 11, 2023.
Since I’m playing a darkwave and post-punk set at Underground x Shadowplay this Friday night and have Disco Matinee coming up on Sunday, I wanted to bring together all those styles in this month’s Beatique mix, which you can listen to now on Mixcloud or via the embed below.
My latest Beatique mix is now live. To listen to the hour-long episode, either tune in on Mixcloud or via the embed here. Here’s the full track list for you.
