This Saturday, July 5, I’ll be at Bigfoot Lodge in Los Feliz, playing records alongside DJs Malvada and Lee from 10 p.m. until close. It’s 21+ and there’s no cover. This isn’t a genre-specific night, but you’ll probably hear a few tracks from Douglas McCarthy, the frontman of Nitzer Ebb, who died in June.
Earlier that evening, just up Los Feliz Blvd. from Bigfoot Lodge, there will be Jean Cocteau birthday celebration at Philosophical Research Society. The event is a fundraiser for PRS organized by Sacred Monster, Surrealist Study Group and 7th House Screenings and will include a screening of Testament of Orpheus the final film in Cocteau’s Orphic Trilogy, which stars the director and features Pablo Picasso, Charles Aznavour and other luminaries. If you’re going, stop by Bigfoot Lodge after the event and tell me all about it.
Also happening at PRS is a special screening of Spirit of ’76 on Thursday, July 3, with commentary and a Q&A from Jeff and Steve McDonald of Redd Kross. Spirit of ’76 is a retro time travel movie from 1990 that is rarely screened. It’s now a retro-retro film with a cast that pits ‘70s stars like David Cassidy, Leif Garrett and Tommy Chong alongside ‘90s cool folks, amongst them Olivia D’Abo and Redd Kross. It’s directed by the painter Lucas Reiner, was co-written by Roman Coppola and features costumes by Sofia Coppola. Looks like tickets are running low for the 7:30 p.m. screening.
But, back to Jean Cocteau for a second. If you’re a fan and live around Orange County, The Frida is hosting a Jean Cocteau series with Beauty and the Beast playing Saturday, July 5, through Wednesday, July 9. The Blood of a Poet screen on July 9 too and there are more coming later in the month.
On July 4, head to Club Underground with Larry G. Over at Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown (Don’t forget to get your tickets for the Pulp Party at Underground on July 18. I’ll be back on the decks at the Grand Star for that one.)
Colin Self, Laurel Halo and Geotic are at Zebulon on Sunday, July 6. On Tuesday, July 8, at Zebulon, there’s a free show with Self Improvement, Memo PST and Terminal A. I’ve seen Terminal Z many times over the years and they’re great live, so definitely plan to arrive early enough to see them.
In Long Beach, there’s a mutual aid benefit for those impacted by the ICE raids over at Alex’s Bar. Brainstory headlines a bill that also includes É Arenas of Chicano Batman, Marinero, Oralia and Mariachi Los Tiburones. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to CHIRLA and profits from merch sales will go to Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project.
