This Friday, March 27, is The Strokes Night at Club Underground. Both rooms of Grand Star Jazz Club will be open, with Larry G. and I on the decks, so you’ll get a solid dose of The Strokes, plus the Underground mix of indie, post-punk, Britpop, synthpop, new wave, darkwave and more. Advance tickets are available now. See you on the dance floor this Friday night. Doors are at 9:30 p.m. and it’s 21+.

Concerts
My top concert pick is Voxtrox, whose new album, Dreamers in Exile, is fantastic. (Read my interview with singer Ramesh Srivastava for more on that.) The band plays new Chinatown concert venue Pacific Electric on Thursday, March 26.
Also playing Thursday night is Draag, who have a new EP out called Miracle Drug that’s pretty tight and will definitely appeal to the ‘90s heads reading this. They’ll be headlining Sid the Cat. Louis XIV, of the legit indie sleaze-era jam “Finding Out True Love Is Blind,” play the Lodge Room on Saturday, March 28 with Mystic Knights opening. Over at Human Resources on Saturday night, Girl Pusher and SRSQ head the lineup.
Sunday is the Solidarity for Sanctuary, a benefit to free detained immigrants, at Sid the Cat with Quetzal, Luz Elena Mendoza, Doris Anahi, Trio Los Caramelos and special guests. On Monday, Vivien Goldman, who is probably best known as a journalist and author, but was also part of Flying Lizards and released a very cool, dubby single in the early ‘80s called “Launderette,” will be playing Zebulon. Meanwhile, at 2220 Arts + Archives, there’s a live electronic show on Monday, March 30, headlined by Hungarian producer Gábor Lázár and including Lara Sarkissian, whose 2024 album, Remnants, is fantastic, on a stacked bill.
Clubs/DJ Events
If you’re around Long Beach on Saturday, head to Alex’s Bar where Rose Knows and Jose Maldonado are doing an Indie Sleaze night. On Sunday, Cut Chemist is playing a candlelight set over at the Townhouse in Venice.
TBH, what looks like it might be the most fun (and budget-friendly) is VendorFest Night Market on Sunday, March 29. This is a free event happening at Gloria Molina Grand Park from 5 – 9 p.m. celebrating L.A.’s street vendors with loads of food and art, plus Butchona on the decks.
Movies
Thursday is the 20th anniversary of Titmouse’s 5 Second Day…Night! This is a screening of a bunch of very short shorts made by Titmouse animators and it’s definitely a good time. There will be two screenings at Vidiots on March 26, one at 7 p.m. and another at 9 p.m. Definitely check it out if you’re an animation fan. Over at 2220 Arts + Archives on Thursday is the first of two Polish animation nights presented by Lightstruck. This event focuses on films made between the early 1960s and mid 1970s, featuring mainly shorts that haven’t been available on home media.
As of the time of writing this, there are still tickets for Saturday night’s screening of The Sparks Brothers at the Egyptian, which will feature a Q&A with Sparks and Edgar Wright moderated by Fred Armisen. Also happening on Saturday is the second showing of Jim Henson: Experiments in Visual Thinking at Philosophical Research Society. Friday night’s screening of these rarely screened films from the legendary creator of The Muppets already sold out, so you probably will want to act fast to catch the March 28 show.
If you have Tuesday afternoon free, head to USC’s Michelle & Kevin Douglas IMAX Theater for AGFA Movie Hooky Club at 3 p.m. This week’s movie is Duelle. I have no idea what it’s like, but it’s from 1975 and the promo art and trailer is very disco. Finally, on April Fool’s Day, Rewind or Die, a series of VHS screenings, is happening at Culver Theater. You won’t know what you’re going to see until the movie starts.

Listen to Beatique, March 2026 featuring music from Grrrl Gang, Peaches, Charli xcx, The Smiths and more.
